introducing the spring 2015 fellows

Matt Lira is a Republican strategist, who most recently served as the Deputy Executive Director of the National Republican Senatorial Committee during the 2014 midterm election cycle. For the past decade, Matt’s work has placed him at the cross-section of politics, government and the emerging digital economy. With a unique mixture of experiences in Congressional Leadership and national campaigns, he has gained first-hand insight into our nation’s political and governing institutions.

Prior to joining the NRSC, Lira served as Senior Advisor to House Majority Leader Eric Cantor. In this capacity, he served on the senior leadership staff, participated in daily strategy discussions on the issues facing the House of Representatives and worked to modernize Congressional institutions as both a communications and public policy platform.

Why did you apply to be a Fellow at Harvard University’s Institute of Politics?

Working with students, particularly here at the Harvard Kennedy School, to explore the future of our democracy is a privilege that I cherish.  After the tactical political battles of recent years, I wanted to reconnect with the sense of optimism, inspiration and creativity that this community represents.

What can students and participants expect to learn about during your study groups?

We’re going to explore the political and policy implications of the digital age.  Everything from how the campaigns of the future will be run to how we can make government more effective.

What are you most looking forward to this semester?

 The unexpected.

What do you think the “future of politics” looks like?

As we transition away from one-way media to interactive media, every aspect of our society will become more personalized and participatory – politics will be no different.  Just as the leaders of the past mastered the emerging media of their time, the leaders of the future will master what produces success in a digital age – authenticity, immediacy and substantive interactivity.

Do you have a favorite life motto you try to live by and why?

“The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.” – Thomas Jefferson

What would you say to inspire young people to pursue a career in politics and public service?

Imagine if Abraham Lincoln or Teddy Roosevelt had decided that politics was too cynical to participate?  Even if you don’t end up in a history textbook, we all have the opportunity to build a better world; everything that is good around us exists because someone said, “I care and I’m going to do something about it.”
