Introducing our Spring 2014 Fellows

Frank J. Fahrenkopf, Jr., until June 30, 2013 was president and CEO of the American Gaming Association (AGA).  In his role as the chief executive of the AGA, Fahrenkopf was the national advocate for the commercial casino industry and was responsible for positioning the association to address regulatory, political and educational issues affecting the industry for the past 18 years.

A lawyer by profession, Fahrenkopf gained national prominence during the 1980s when he served as chairman of the Republican Party for six of President Ronald Reagan's eight years in the White House (1983 to 1989).

Why did you apply to be a Fellow at Harvard's Institute of Politics?

The opportunity to "hear" what students' concerns are and to explore possible solutions to our political system problems.

What can students and participants expect to learn about during your Study Groups?

How Washington works (or doesn't) and what changes, if any, should be made to the present political process.

What are you most looking forward to this semester?

The interaction with students.

What is the best advice you have received and from whom?

"A great deal of talent is lost in the world for want of a little courage. Every day sends to their graves obscure men and women whom timidity prevented from making a first effort; who, if they could have been induced to begin, would in all probability have gone great lengths in the career of fame. The fact is, that to do anything in the world worth doing we must not stand back shivering and thinking of the cold and danger but jump in and scramble through as well as we can." Richard Cardinal Cushing

Do you have a favorite life motto you try to live by and why?

Never Give Up!!!!

What would you say to inspire young people to pursue a career in politics and public service?

Politics and public service are tremendously exciting and fulfilling endeavors and are in desperate need of young Liberal, Moderate and Conservative advocates all seeking the best interests of the American people.
